Scriptural gem for January 2013

In Psalm 119:31 we read: "I cling to Your testimonies; O LORD, do not put me to shame"

The word 'Testimonies' is actually used 13 times in this Psalm, which is significant. The Hebrew word for 'Testimonies' is 'Eduth' and the root of that word is 'Ud'. The meaning of 'Ud' is: 'Something that is repeated over and over again' How interesting!

Let us picture a courtroom scene. The prosecutor calls a witness. The witness testifies. The defence then cross-examines the witness. Why? - in order to see if that witness can be discredited by finding holes in their story and causing them to change their testimony...At that moment, because it has changed, it ceases to be a true testimony...

Now let us think about our Christian 'Testimony'. Far from it being just getting up and sharing how we came to know the Saviour, our 'Testimony' is the evidence of the Spirit of the Living God within us. And for this to be a true 'Testimony' (as the Hebrew root word indicates) it has to be something that is repeated over and over again - otherwise it does not qualify as a 'Testimony'. The fact is that everyone in the world - Christian or non-Christian can have a 'good' testimony some of the time. But the proof of whether we have a true 'Testimony' of the Living God within us, lies in the fact that it is repeated over and over, regardless of our circumstances.

That is why the Psalmist can cling to God's 'Testimonies' - they are repeated over and over again - not only in Scripture but also in all creation and in the lives of those in whom He is at work.

There is a beautiful image in Revelation 22:2:  "...On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations."

Wow! a tree that yields fruit in and out of season? every month? how is that possible?

Dear friends, the reason why the tree yields fruit every month is clear - It is because it has its roots in the river of Living Water. Likewise, we cannot have a real testimony unless the very life and power of the risen Christ is in us. If He is not, our testimony will be a stop/start affair depending on our circumstances, with no credibility at all.

Lord, flood us with Yourself that we may have an actual Testimony. Amen
